Italy has its Forum for Wine Environmental Sustainability

It was created in Rome in March 2013 and was presented at Vinitaly (VeronaFiere) in April 2013: the Forum for Wine Environmental Sustainability, which aims to bring out unique, shared and comparable indicators to measure wine sustainability. In addition to the two supporters of the initiative, Gambero Rosso and Unione Italiana Vini, there are already more than twenty promoters from the academic and entrepreneurial world. Starting from the numerous Italian experiences that are leading the way to sustainability – Tergeo, Montefalco2015, Salcheto Carbon Free, VIVA, Magis … – it is necessary to identify common parameters recognized by the wine industry and declined in a shared language, as France and America are already trying to do. The indicators cover emissions of greenhouse gases, water cycle (vineyard, production, recovery, etc.), and biodiversity. Two work groups have been organized: one will develop the proposal of macro-indicators of environmental sustainability, by analyzing also the possible harmonization with international standards. The spokesperson will be Prof. Attilio Scienza (photo), University of Milan. The second group will take care instead of institutional relations, marketing and communications. The spokesperson will be Michele Manelli, from Salcheto Carbon Free Work Group.
